design & concept
we are inspired by the extraordinarily sculptural presence of slanted rock formations in the American desert, and explore this slanted geometry as a 'neighborhood' through a massing that organically emerges out of the desert soil: a quasi-natural environment that is characterized by sculptural volumes and striking and essential shadows
program & use
our slanted geometry plays at the scale of the single home to generate shaded patios. The tilted prism has a slanted roof emerging from the sand on one side, and a covered patio on the opposite one. The volume contains the garage at grade, sunken living room and upper floor bedrooms. The large living room is open and loft-like with double height ceiling, open kitchen and vast glass wall for total visual and physical continuity with the exterior patio and pool.
The patio is visually connected to the neighboring homes. Its slightly slanted/sunken floor gives it a discrete separation from the surrounding environment. We imagine this patio to be a green and shaded oasis, a moment of lushness, a respite from the heat, dry desert.
impact & significance
a different living experience for retirement, in community, in proximity with one another, and in connection with nature.
