concept & vision
we assemble a shipping container shed to generate an exciting sequence and flow of interior spaces from the ground floor to main floor, and from a central node/atrium throughout the building. And capture portions of open space in order to create outdoor areas and courtyards for sculpture and events, as well as open plazas along the surrounding streets
design & architecture
3 to 4 containers form a structural frame, generating 40’ clear span space either 20’ or 40’ high. We repeat the frame assembly to form “sheds” of various lengths, as required. Sheds can also be coupled in width by sharing one vertical wall of containers and removing every other container. Cross-bracing at the end facades resist lateral loads, while all other structural joints utilize existing container connections
program & use
we tested a variety of layouts, bending and coupling the shed in different forms: W, X, Y. Each of these configurations generates vast triangular courtyards with strong perspectival effect and wide plazas to show sculpture or to house outdoor public events and concerts
impact & significance
our temporary shed, with a clear 40-foot span and 20 or 40-foot interior height, is an ambitious and yet ingenuous assembly to provide long-term temporary space for a variety of public programs
