concept & vision
a performative and functional artificial intelligence laboratory to record and display, where neighbors, community members and passersby are invited to contribute to a growing dataset of stories to feed AI the diversity of human experience. AI lab technicians, the public, and bespoke AI algorithms work together to collect and generate visual responses to contributed stories – images and videos that change over time on the various LED screens
design & architecture
in the same bespoke spirit of the lab, we designed the volume with patterns of the underground railroad quilt codes to frame the screens on each side – we studied these codes, used to support enslaved Blacks to move north, and selected with Stephanie the LOG CABIN, a save place, the FLYING GEESE, birds guiding people to water and rest, the NORTH STAR, obviously leading north. And the DRUNKARD’s PATH on the floor – directing to always move in a zig-zag pattern for safety.
Inside, a circular bench encourages conversations and onsite recording, allowing also full ADA access and use for this intimate experience
impact & significance
an exploration to resist using bespoke physical and digital patterns, to highlight our history and to make AI more equitable
